"LEGAZY"
cannot be categorized into any style, since they compose
melodies and beats that can be called Hip-Hop, R&B, slow rock,
Oriental, Reggae and many others of our own style. Their motive is to
satisfy all kind of ethnic and
age groups without any barriers. The
band "LEGAZY"
was put together in mid 2004, performing in Melbourne, Australia.
The
band comprises of ‘AJ’ – Amila Nuwan and DJ Semu, shorten for Semuthu.
To give the biography of ‘AJ’, he started his music at a very
young age of 6 or 7. Encourage by his loving mother "Chintha
Padmini" he started learning the piano from Ms. Priyanthika Herath
and sat for practical and theory exams of Trinity College of Music,
London. He underwent voice training by Nanda Malanie and completed the 1st
stage or "Prathama"
of the examination
conducted by the Bhatkandha University of India. Then
he joined "Kalabhoomi Nikethanaya" to continue with the
Visharada examination and
completed the "Madhyama" or Part II stage when he was aged of 17
or 18. He did Music in School and offered music for GCE (OL) sitting the
examination from the Asoka Primary College.
He
joined Ananda College for his Advanced Level and the first guru that
influenced him in singing and playing instruments was Mr. Lesley
Wijewickrama. He involved himself in
every music sphere in school – the School Band, the School Choir, and
in many
other musical events. The
basic introduction to play the guitar and the drums were given by Mr.
Lesley Wijewickrama
and there after he improved on his own by self learning. Performed
with a band named "Charming Cubs" as a teenager and did
vocals, keyboards
and drums. Did two music shows at the Elphinston Theatre way back in
1991/93 and sat for the A/L's in
Commerce subjects from Ananda College. He was a member
of the school band "Rhythm
of the Maroons" and played the drums and also did vocals. He
joined Mary Anne Choir for voice
training. He then started his business studies and doing music
became more of a hobby.
In
1999 he went to Melbourne, Australia for further education and completed
the degree in Bachelor of
Business in Management and Marketing in 2001, and then the 2nd degree
in Bachelor of MIS (Management
Information Systems) in 2003 and started working for Australian companies.
In the mean he performed with few bands in Melbourne - Melbourne
Ceylonese, Nature's Image etc., Around
2003, he performed with a band named "Unique" and did many gigs.
In May, 2004 coming back to Sri
Lanka for a vacation and he started composing melodies
for two songs named "Aadarayada me?" and "Nidikumba Pandure",
the lyrics were written by his Aunt Samanmalie and the 3rd song
"Thanikamata
Maa Asala" was composed by Upali Kannagara. He released all 3 songs
and on the heels of success he went back to Australia with a passion to
get into full time music with his own creations.
He
then met Semuthu who was a DJ and joined him to perform as a band with a
new style,
and the band was called "LEGAZY" and performed
in many events in Melbourne and Adelaide. With
backup vocals from Gihan Jayamanne he started composing few more songs
and decided to go back to Sri Lanka and release
few more songs and release an album by the end of the year (2006).
He
came to Sri Lanka in November 2005 along with DJ Semu and released the
first hip hop song called “Avege" (Anger) on radio and also a video
clip now being
aired on TV channels. The 2nd song
"Digugamane" was then released to media in February just before returning
to Melbourne due to some music commitments. All the melodies were composed
by AJ. They perform in the languages Sinhalese, English, and does rap.
Rather
than doing what every body is doing in the music industry, they compose
melodies and beats of their own and create their own style of music and
concentrate on the meaning of the lyrics that explains different styles
of emotions and then combining them with their own styles
About
